In this workshop, students are guided through individual and group movement explorations based around physical, visual, and emotional ideas. This could build into compositional structures and contemporary phrase material that investigates bold shifts of weight, finds luscious spirals and redirections, and challenges rhythmic continuity. We are lucky to have live sound by Omit/Transmit Orchestra, an eight-piece electro-acoustic ensemble that experiments in wholly-improvised music. Join us as we move in a ways that feel good while staying curious about space, time, sound, and physicality. Open to all levels; previous dance experience is not necessary!
Hannah Marcus is a Chicago-based dance artist and maker interested in supporting and deconstructing the materiality of the body. Her research finds form in collaborative performance and video, often exploring the nexus between movement and visual design, sound, technology, and language. Hannah’s work has been presented by the LookOut Series at Steppenwolf’s 1700 Theatre, DePaul Art Museum, Jello Performance Series, Lumber Studios, MOMENTA Dance Company, Expand Community Arts Alliance, The Place (London), and the Betty Pease Studio Theater. Alongside creating, she’s performed in works by Shannon Gillen, Rosie Herrera, Ohad Naharin, Shay Kuebler, Russell Lepley, and Meredith Monk among others. Hannah holds a BFA in dance with a minor in Performing Arts Management & Entrepreneurship from the University of Michigan, graduating as a recipient of the Earl V. Moore Award in 2020. Upon moving back to Chicago, she started working with House of DOV and Hedwig Dances, the latter of which brought her to Dessau, Germany for Bauhaus Fest 2022. She currently freelances on projects directed by Drew Lewis & Helen Lee in addition to pursuing other opportunities for creation & collaboration. www.hannah-marcus.com
