Chinese Folk Dance with Angela Tam

Learn to dance with silk fans, drums, or even bowls and spoons! In China, there are 56 official indigenous ethnic groups each with their own form of dance. Many also vary from region to region. In this class, students will learn a short fan dance from China's Han ethnicity. Han people make up over 90% of the country and Han culture is what most people think of when referring to Chinese culture.

About the Instructor:
Angela Tam is a dancer, choreographer, and teaching artist. She is the founding Artistic Director of Yin He Dance.

A Chicago native, Angela began dancing as a child under Qiu Yue Jin. Since then, Angela has studied Chinese dance under Margaret Yuen, Grant Zhuang, and others. She has also received instruction in ballet, contemporary, and classical Japanese dance.

Since founding Yin He Dance, Angela has been devoted to sharing her love of Chinese dance as a performer and educator. She has performed extensively all over the Chicagoland area, most notably as a featured soloist at Chicago's citywide Chinese New Year celebration at the Chicago Cultural Center. She is a multi-year recipient of the Ethnic & Folk Arts Master Apprentice Grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. She also choreographs folkloric and contemporary work.
