Alan Mearns, aka Yes the Raven is a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland whose unique musical “double-identity” was recently highlighted by YouTube’s Rick Beato, in his video, Unknown Musical Genius. Alan is both a celebrated classical guitar virtuoso and a gifted songwriter under his folk persona, Yes the Raven. His recent Bach recording, Sei Solo, was met with both critical and popular acclaim, climbing to number 8 in the classical billboard charts. As Yes the Raven, Alan has recorded three full albums: Love is Covered in Dust, Abilene, and U2 - Covered in Love.
In this workshop Alan will sample his cover of U2’s New Year’s Day as a vehicle to explore several techniques and ideas including:
Recasting modern pop music back into a folk medium.
Exploring creative ideas and expressing originality through covers.
Diving deep into the magical qualities of the guitar by understanding its sonorities.
Introducing and employing classical guitar techniques in the realm of folk music.
Yes the Raven’s recording of New Year’s Day as well as many other U2 covers can be heard on, U2 tribute - Covered in Love available on all major streaming platforms including Bandcamp. CD recordings of the album are available at AlanMearns.com the proceeds of which go towards the (RED) charity whose aims include the eradication of the AIDS virus and the reduction of world poverty.
