Embellishing Melodies Using Old Time Fingerstyle Banjo Workshop with Hilary Hawke

So many times we learn a banjo tune from a book of tab, or we may copy over and over how someone else already played a song. In this workshop learn how to take a basic melody and incorporate rolls and embellishments to make a melody sound natural on the banjo. Free up your playing by learning some strategies and tips to help you take a melody and play it on the banjo.

Hilary Hawke is known for having a fluid ability to play and switch between many styles of banjo playing while preserving the integrity and the beauty of each style. She most recently had the honor of being the banjoist in the 2019-2020 Tony award winning revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! on Broadway, as well as being a sought after banjoist for regional and off-broadway theatre around the country. Hilary has coached major film and TV actors on banjo, guitar, and bass, as well as kept an active private studio teaching banjo for the past 15 years in Brooklyn, NY. Hilary has devoted herself to performing and teaching in bluegrass, old time, and folk music but also considers herself to be a music lover of all styles and brings this into her own songwriting, singing and performing. She has released 7 albums of music with her bands, Dubl Handi, the Wild Goats, and M Shanghai Stringband.
