Join the group Kombilesa Mi from San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia for this special workshop exploring traditional Afro-Colombian dances. San Basilio de Palenque is a maroon community in Colombia founded by formerly enslaved Africans in the late 1600’s. It is considered the first free Black town in the Americas and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The group will cover dance styles such as El Mapale, Cumbia, Culebra, Catalina, and El Pavo and explain the cultural and historical context of the dances which express mourning, celebration, and are essential to ceremonial and religious life.
