The Evolution of Three Finger Banjo Styles Workshop Series with Ryan Fisher

This three part workshop will explore the evolution of three banjo picking techniques that evolved from a single technical concept of not repeating fingers in the right hand. This parameter gave rise to three finger rolling, single string alternating thumb, and melodic style picking. One or two tabbed songs will be provided for each workshop that demonstrate each concept. The first workshop will focus on earlier three finger style with rolling the melody as the predominant technique. The second workshop will focus on single string thumb alternation to play melodies and back up. The third workshop will explore melodic style in which avoids string repetition and is used to play melodies, usually fiddle tunes, note for note. The ultimate goal is to use these three techniques interchangeably, to emulate the idiosyncratic sounds that define present day three finger banjo picking.
