History of R&B Workshop Series

These workshops will unfold aspects of Rhythm & Blues music from it’s post WWII beginnings through it’s commercial success and cultural relevance in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. We’ll listen to recordings, discuss the artists and actually learn and play 2 or 3 songs each week. Ring the bell we’re talkin’ OLD SCHOOL here!.

This series is offered by teaching artist, bandleader, and published scholar John Mead, Ph.D., who holds a doctorate in literature, having written a dissertation on the history of militant anti-slavery and anti-racism in the antebellum United States. Doctor Mead has taught and played in the Old Town School community for several decades, offering a deep catalog of funk, disco, and rock & soul to hundreds of students and listeners.
