Old Time Fiddle Workshop with Nokosee Fields

This class will cover a broad range of topics relating to old time fiddle. We'll cover technique through simple and effective exercises to build a foundation of confident and efficient playing. Using fiddle tunes, Nokosee and talk about ways to create variations rhythmically and melodically as well as discuss listening and learning from source material. Nokosee will share his insights on groove and drive. This will be a guided discussion between Nokosee, Old Town School’s John Huber, and those in attendance. Come with your fiddle or just to learn about the music from a master old time fiddler.

Born and raised in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Nokossee Fields began studying orchestral violin at a young age. After years of learning and performing classical music, Nokosee turned his attention to various forms of traditional American music, performing, teaching, and touring professionally. As a bassist, he tours with the country band Western Centuries, as well as the old time band Steam Machine.
As a teacher, he has taught at the Augusta Heritage Center, tutored at Centrums Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, and was the artist in residence for the Portland Old Time Gathering. He’s placed in numerous fiddle contests and most notably took first in the 2019 Appalchian String Band Festival fiddle competition. Nokosee’s lengthy and diverse experience in the performing arts gives him a unique approach to creating, listening and facilitating music.
