Hip-Hop and the Art of Sampling

Join Coolout Chris, one of Chicago’s hip-hop veterans, for this unique workshop exploring hip-hop and the art of sampling. Participants will learn about the five elements of hip-hop including historical and cultural context and focus specifically on the role that sampling has played in hip-hop production. Chris will also conduct a live analog beat-making demonstration where he will construct a beat from scratch by sampling from a record. He will take participants through each step of the process and shed light on the skills, technique, and technology needed for sampling.

Participants are welcome to bring a beat that they have created on their own on a jump drive for an open listening session during the last ten minutes of the workshop.

Producer, DJ, Emcee, "Coolout Chris" has been rocking Chicago since he was an 18-year-old and formed the 90’s era rap group Spalaney’s, who would spend the next 5 years touring and showcasing for Giant/Warner Bros., E.M.I., A.S.C.A.P and with DJ Quik. At their height the group performed at Prince’s nightclub Glam Slam in Minneapolis, and their ’94 song ‘Universal Language’ was featured on the first nationally distributed Chicago hip-hop compilation, “Talent Fest” on Beathole Records.

Coolout would soon go on to form his production company Beat Quarters, and later team up artist Amina to form the production & performance duo Urbanized Music. In 2003 they would co-found Chicago Hip-Hop Initiative, a non-profit artist collective, which championed the passage of a resolution to declare July as the official Chicago Hip-Hop Heritage month. In 2010 Coolout spent 2 weeks in Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) as part of a contingency of US Cultural Envoys conducting workshops and recording local artists around the country while promoting Hip-Hop as a tool for peace and tolerance.

Coolout’s music has been featured on radio, television, film, various websites, and podcasts. He has worked with many notable independent artists both in the US and abroad with artists from Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, and Ghana. He is currently touring and working on studio projects. He also serves as mentor to several upcoming artists and producers.
