Hip-Hop Techniques: Lyrics & Production

Learn how to make beats, write lyrics, and create your own hip-hop song completely from scratch! Whether you’ve already tried your hand at music production and lyric writing or you’re a complete beginner, this two-part workshop led by Chicago emcee and producer, Jovan Landry, will bring you on a journey to discover the essence of hip-hop, a global phenomenon born in the United States.

In the first class session, participants will learn about the origins and elements of hip-hop, techniques for writing lyrics, and how to make original instrumental beats using GarageBand. Participants will be sent home with a lyric writing assignment to complete during the week. During the second class session, students will share their finished lyrical composition and learn how to record and mix their own vocals over the instrumental beat that was created the week prior. Participants will walk away from the class with a finalized version of the song they've created.

Jovan Landry is the ultimate triple threat. This interdisciplinary artist proclaims herself as the "1/3 Filmmaker, 1/3 Photographer and 1/3 Emcee" based in Chicago. Jovan's mantra is to use her artistic gifts to reflect the true stories of the world, herself and others. With the discovery of her unique voice at the age of 16 through creating her own video blogs, she tapped into musical production, film and photography and many other artistic forms. She received her B.A in Film & Video from Columbia College Chicago, and throughout the years worked with a number of musicians, artists, dancers, businesses, organizations and fellow filmmakers. Musically, Jovan has a number of self-released EPs & albums, and her lyrical, articulate and high energy performances has landed her on hundreds of showcases and festivals across the U.S and overseas both as a solo act and with her 5-piece live band, 'The Land'. In 2017, Jovan was awarded the Incubate Grant presented by WeWork Creator Awards, where she will produce her 5th album, 'Synergy', a created exclusively by women in Chicago Hip-Hop. Most recently, Jovan was invited to Lagos, Nigeria (as both a filmmaker, rapper & producer) to participate in danceGATHERING 2018, an “anti-disciplinary” experiment ensued that culminated in a 2-day contemporary performance street festival.
