Hakikino Hula
Aloha! `O Kaho`okele Napuahinano Sumberg ko`u inoa. Hinano is a fourth generation Native Hawaiian born and raised on the north side of Chicago, Illinois. Alakaʻi under the direction of Kumu Hula Lanialoha Lee, Hinano has been dancing hula, chanting, and perpetuating Hawaiian culture in Chicago for over 20 years. Hinano has presented Hula for various audiences, and has experience presenting workshops for elementary school’s assemblies/classrooms, college campuses, retirement homes, and festivals. In 2018 Hinano traveled to Hilo, Hawaiʻi for the Ka ʻAha Hula ʻO Halauaola (World Hula Conference) to participate in the opening ceremony with her halau (school), a culminating event with over five-hundred Hula ʻOlapa (students) from all over the world. She is a co-curator of the Chicago Legacy Hula exhibit at the Field Museum, showcasing the last 135 years of Hula and Hawaiians in Chicago. She is also a traditional visual artist, taking inspiration from both places she calls home, Chicago and Hawaiʻi. Taking her artworks into workshops at North Park University, Northeastern Illinois University, and Northwestern Illinois University to name a few. Through Hula and Art, Hinano expresses love for her people; she hopes to educate, inspire, and share that Aloha with others. Mahalo!
