Adanya Gilmore

Ballet, Creative Movement

Adanya Gilmore is a choreographer, performer, educator and writer by way of Washington D.C., now based in Chicago.

Her training began at Jones-Haywood School of Dance and grew to represent many lineages including classical ballet, modern, post-modern, contact improvisation and social dancing.

Her choreography incorporates the body, objects, text and sound to harness intimacy, boldness, and unconventional details of human personality and experience. Recently she has been researching play and drawing inspiration from working with youth to create movement games of her own.

She has performed for and worked with artists such as Jennifer Monson, Tere O'Connor, Dr. Cynthia Oliver, Christine Johnson, and Ching-i Chang.

She has been a teaching artist since 2019, holding a position most recently as Visiting Assistant Professor at Beloit College. She is now teaching ballet and creative movement at Old Town School of Folk Music.

Her writing about performing and moving has been published by Sixty Inches From Center, Performance Response Journal and the Humanities Research Institute, where she was an Interseminars Fellow in 2022.

She holds a BA from Beloit College and an MFA in Dance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
