Piano, Guitar, Songwriting
In both my playing and teaching, I see music and music theory not as something rote and stale, but as a language primed for expression and connection. Whether playing folk, jazz, classical, pop, or even writing something original, it is my goal to work with students to help bring color and life to what some may otherwise see as just notes on a page. We’ll collaborate to find the gaps in your vocabulary, and I’ll offer tools for focused, fulfilling, (and dare I say fun!) practice that leads to real, enjoyable progress.
Myself? I’ve somehow been teaching since the age of twelve and have been grateful to have many opportunities to be able to continue to nourish both my love of music and the playing of it. A graduate of Indiana University, I’ve spent my post-grad life splitting time between teaching, directing, and playing. In 2019, I founded Albion West, a storytelling (through music) project based here in Chicago. That has given home to most of my musical collaboration, focusing specifically on how instruments, and therefore instrumentalists, can take on a narrative role in lyrical music.
Piano has, since I was five, been my main instrument, but guitar and the craft of songwriting have long joined the party. Now all of that goes into how I think about and engage in the listening, playing, creating, and teaching of all types of music. It’s my joy that music has filled my life, and it’s my hope that it can find a way into yours too.
