Teachers at the Old Town School

Alvin McGovern

Guitar

Alvin has been singing his whole life, and started playing guitar when he was 18 years old. In the summer of 1974 he attended the Old Town School of Folk Music's Summer Guitar Camp as a guitar student, and started coming to the school soon after that to sing in the four-part choir Mike Dunbar was conducting. In October Bill Hanson, the facility co-director (along with Mike) asked him if he would be interested in joining the staff, and he started teaching his first class (Guitar II) in November, 1974.

He has sung and played at a variety of venues, on recordings, and on the radio as a solo performer and in groups, most notably as the other half of the Chris McIntosh & Alvin McGovern duo, and as a regular accompanist for Carole Peterson/Macaroni Soup. And with Ms. Peterson he acted as musician, co-producer, and co-arranger for her two children's music CDs: "Sticky Bubble Gum, and Other Tasty Tunes" and "H.U.M.* - All Year Long (*Highly Usable Music)". The second title was designated a 2004 Parents' Choice Approved Award winner, and both are available by writing Carole at macaronisp@aol.com, or on line at http://www.cdbaby.com.
