Zaiko Langa Langa

Founded in early 1969, Zaiko Langa Langa are a seminal contemporary Congolese band from DR Congo. Their music and creativity has greatly influenced Congolese and African music on the whole. Voted and crowned "band of the century" in Democratic Republic of Congo, they remain one of the most influential bands in African music. Currently led by N'Yoka Longo, their genre of music is called soukous which means "to shake”. A popular genre of dance music from the Congo Basin derived from Congolese rumba in the 1960s, soukous gained popularity in France in the ‘80s.

This project is partially supported by a CityArts Year of Chicago Music grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events.
