The Cajun Vagabonds play traditional Cajun and Zydeco music with an occasional rock, funk, or swing classic. The band generates the perfect mix of dance-oriented music for dances, festivals, parties, and other event where people want to enjoy a dance groove. High energy and spontaneity are distinctive features of a Cajun Vagabond performance.
The band began when two precocious ten-year old musician friends and one dad performed at a house party. In typical Cajun style, all the furniture was removed from the largest room in the house, the band found its groove, and the whole house rocked on its foundations as enthusiastic guests danced for hours. The band has continued to play regularly for events and celebrations where people get up and dance.
The Volo Bogtrotters came together somewhere near Chicago in the mid-1980s. They quickly gained a reputation around the Midwest and the rest of the country for their spirited interpretations of old-time songs learned from old 78 RPM records combined with their twin-fiddle renditions of tunes that Chirps Smith collected from older fiddlers in downstate Illinois during his days with the Indian Creek Delta Boys. After fifteen or so years of playing festivals, music camps, and dances from coast to coast, they called it quits in 2002. Ten years ago, all six members of the band - Fred Campeau (fiddle, banjo, Hawaiian guitar), Steve Rosen (banjo, mandolin, fiddle), Tony Scarimbolo (bass, harmonica), Chirps Smith (fiddle, mandolin), along with Jim Nelson (guitar) and Paul Tyler (mandolin, fiddle) - joined forces in a reconstituted and rejuvenated version of the band that is better than ever and still drawing crowds of old-time music fans.
