With the spicy heat of ethnic rhythms and the mystical sounds of an ancient language, Assyrian band Azadoota rouse unsuspecting listeners to their feet and onto dance-floors across the globe.

Founder Robin Zirwanda comes from Iraq, where the Assyrians trace their ancestors back 7000 years. Recognized throughout the diaspora as a goodwill ambassador for his little-known nation, Robin sings catchy originals in his native Assyrian Aramaic language.

Wearing costumes inspired by their royal ancestors, Azadoota use the characteristic rhythms of Assyrian folk music and delivers them in contemporary arrangements. Traditional percussion works with driving bass and rhythm guitar to give traditional beats a new life on the contemporary dance-floor. A powerful horn section heralds a renaissance of Assyrian culture, in defiance of the destruction occurring in their ancestral lands. With their snappy riffs and catchy tunes that always get the audience dancing, the band conveys an irrepressible spirit.

All the way from Sydney Australia on their first USA tour, Azadoota brings you an Assyrian extravaganza of percussive, dance-rock worldbeat.

“If one were to pick a single act that sums up the WOMAD spirit, it would probably be the Australian-Iraqi party band Azadoota.” - The Guardian
