The mandolin has found a home in many styles of music: bluegrass, swing, jazz, old time, Irish, classical, folk and rock. Because of its small scale and violin-like tuning, the mandolin is perfect for learning fiddle tunes and melodies. Guitarists will find that mandolin rhythm skills complement their existing technique.
Take level 1 if you have taken Introduction to Mandolin or have some experience on another instrument. Mandolin 1 will introduce you to fundamental techniques like using a pick with your right hand, alternating down and up strokes, basic open chords and melodies, slides, and using a drone to harmonize. Learn melodies by ear and with tablature and how to play a rhythm part to support several songs from the Old Town School of Folk Music Songbook.
Introduction to the Mandolin OR some prior experience on another instrument, especially string or fretted instruments.
Mandolins are available for rent or purchase at the Old Town School Music Stores.
