Geared towards all instrumentalists and vocalists, the goal of this class is to learn the fundamentals of music theory by applying it to the instrument or voice you already know! It'll be set up like an ensemble class, with each person on an instrument (and/or singing). We'll play songs from various genres (mainly folk and rock, but others too!) that highlight different theory ideas, then dissect and analyze them in real time. We'll hear, play, and discuss common chord progressions, scales and melodies, intervals, and even things like secondary dominants. Though we'll sometimes use written, notated music as a visual lesson, this class will not focus on note reading, nor demand a knowledge of it. Lead sheets and our ears will be our guide.
*If playing a harmony-based instrument (i.e. piano, guitar, ukulele), the student should be comfortable playing basic chords
*If playing a melody based instrument (i.e. violin, cello, harmonica), the student should be comfortable playing C, G, D, A, and E scales
*If singing or drumming, the student should be interested in expanding knowledge of harmony, sight-singing, and ear-training/listening
