Interested in learning more about Arabic rhythms? Take an introductory workshop into the rhythms and iqa’at that originated from regions across West Asia. From beats that farmers played in between shifts, to boisterous wedding drums, this workshop is designed like a charcuterie board, you’ll get a taste of various Levantine rhythms. We will study beats from Lebanon, Egypt, Syria and beyond! These rhythms will help beginner and advanced musicians alike expand their repertoire and world music knowledge. Karl El Sokhn, aka Reckless Darling, is a Chicago-based musician and educator. He specializes in drums, riq, and guitar. His musician career started at the age of 15 in his home country of Lebanon, where he performed in heavy metal bands.
As his tastes matured, he expanded his knowledge to include maqam, rock, jazz, and funk. Reckless Darling has now collaborated with a wide array of artists across the Chicagoland area from local indie bands to award-winning educators and international musical acts such as: Clarissa Bitar, Ronnie Malley, Wanees Zarour, Billy Joel Jr, Tuvergen Band, Jamila and the Other Heroes, U of C Middle East Music Ensemble, TAYF Ensemble to name a few.
