Piedmont Style, in this case, refers to all the different substyles in which one or more fingers play a melody over a regular alternating bass. Though it is more common east of the Appalachians, some players from west of the Appalachians like Mississippi John Hurt and Furry Lewis also played that way. Geared toward experienced players newer to fingerstyle or blues guitar approaches, this workshop will walk students through a number of pieces, all in the key of C. including Come Let Us March (Daniel Womack); Freight Train (Elizabeth Cotten); Louis Collins (John Hurt); and Candy Man (Gary Davis). This workshop will be followed by an in-depth look at Gary Davis’s Buck Dance and expand on the techniques taught in this workshop.
