Why do different instruments and voices sound, well, different? How does plucking a guitar string make our ear drums vibrate? What are the differences between music and noise? How can a basic understanding of acoustics (the science of sound) make me a better musician?
In this zero-background-required workshop, we'll address these questions and more in a fun, hands-on, demonstration-based exploration of sound as a physical phenomenon. Topics will include the basic properties of sound waves, the overtone series, and resonance. We’ll use animated simulations, a spectrograph (tool for measuring sound) and a slinky to explore how these concepts relate to the music that we make every day. Please bring your instruments & voices as they will serve as some of our examples!
