African-Rooted Percussion Workshop with Moris Cañate Reyes and Erica Kika Parra

Join master percussionists Moris Cañate Reyes and Erica Kika Parra for a workshop in the rich traditions of the Afro-Colombian communities of the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Cañate is a world-renowned performer and educator from Barranquilla, Colombia and Parra is a master percussionist of Colombian rhythms and a graduate of Berklee College of Music in music education. Both are members of the NYC based Colombian group Rebolu and have performed for many years in all of the significant traditional Colombian ensembles based in the NYC area. They have both teamed up for this workshop to educate students on Afro-Colombian rhythms such as Cumbia, Bullerengue, Seresesé, Baile Negro, Mapale, Fandango e Legua, Tambora, and Gaita percussion Cumbia styles. A variety of Afro-Colombian percussion instruments will be discussed and demonstrated.

Students are encouraged to bring traditional Colombian drums and percussion as available, although conga drums can also be used.

This class is open to all skill levels and ages and will be taught bilingually in English and Spanish.
