Dear Old Illinois: Fiddling Workshop with Genevieve Koester

Explore traditional Illinois old time fiddling through the styles of central and southern Illinois fiddlers like Otis Reynolds, Harvey “Pappy” Taylor, Noah Beavers, as well as prolific fiddler, composer and traditional Illinois old time conservator, Garry Harrison. Workshop will focus on Illinois tune repertoire, with an emphasis on signature bowing techniques as heard in the original source recordings.

Genevieve Harrison Koester was introduced to old time string band music before she was born. She learned to play the fiddle from her late father, Garry Harrison who was an influence in the world of old time fiddling from the 1970’s until his death in 2012. In 2008 Garry, Genevieve, and Smith Koester earned 1st place in the Traditional Band contest at the Appalachian String Band Festival with the band The New Mules and released the album Pride of America in 2009. The band continues to play under the name White Mule, and Genevieve teaches fiddle at the Old Town School of Folk Music.
