Arranging for the Hammered Dulcimer

Ken Kolodner will present a wide variety of techniques used in arranging and accompaniment/backup. All levels are welcome. Regardless of your skill level, you will walk out the workshop with plenty of ideas. The session will focus on the application of arranging techniques and ideas (e.g. three note chords, valley rolls, bass lines, separation of harmony from melody, tremolos, arpeggio fills, melodic runs, hand separation, accent shifts, syncopation, chord subs, application of chord theory, creating variations etc.), the development of hammering skills and accompaniment ideas (e.g. super simple to more complex vamps and rhythmic patterns and bass lines, counter melody). Techniques will be applied in a waltz. The tunes and ideas will be taught through demonstration, by ear and using standard musical notation. Full written arrangements of the tunes also will be provided. Use of a recording device is highly recommended.

Ken Kolodner is one of the most experienced teachers of the hammered dulcimer in the U.S. , having taught at nearly 100 week-long workshops over 30+ years at Swannanoa, Augusta, Common Ground, Meadowlark, The John Campbell Folk School, Kentucky Music Week, The Mountain Arts Gathering, The Northeast Dulcimer Symposium, The Heartland Dulcimer Festival and various others. In addition, Kolodner has taught at hundreds of festivals, has close to 100 private students, and runs The Sandbridge Hammered Dulcimer Retreat. Now, in its 13th year, “Sandbridge“ runs for four weeks and attracts 75-80 intermediate/advanced players from around the U.S. Kolodner’s repertoire in old-time, Celtic and world music is extensive and he has toured for over 30 years with Helicon (with Chris Norman & Robin Bullock), Scottish National Fiddle Champion Elke Baker, Quebec fiddler Laura Risk, and now with his son Brad, bassist Alex Lacquement and fiddler/vocalist Rachel Eddy.
