New Lost City Ramblers Ensemble

The New Lost City Ramblers were hugely influential ambassadors for old-time music. They formed in 1958 during the Folk Revival with founding members Mike Seeger (Pete Seeger's half-brother), John Cohen, and Tom Paley. Paley was replaced by Tracy Schwarz in 1962. The NLCRs faithfully learned and played music originally captured on 78rpm records of traditional musicians from the 1920s and 1930s. They also sought out these older musicians, befriended them, learned from them, and toured with them. Known for their musicianship, scholarship, and corny jokes, the Ramblers influenced countless younger musicians, among them Ry Cooder, Chris Darrow, and Jerry Garcia. Their performances and residencies on college campuses inspired the formation of dozens of young string bands. The New Lost City Ramblers appeared at the first University of Chicago Folk Festival in 1961 along with the Stanley Brothers, Roscoe Holcomb, Elizabeth Cotton, and Willie Dixon.
