Greek and Middle Eastern Violin Workshop with Megan Gould

Join Megan Gould, the violinist from Monika Jalili's visiting Persian music ensemble (see World Music Wednesdays 9/5/12), for a workshop on music of the Middle East and Greece - particularly the Asia Minor style popular in early Rebetika and Smyrnaika. Megan is a NYC-based performer with deep experience performing and studying this music. She will draw upon selected repertoire to explain basic maqam theory, including the use of micro-tones, specific ornaments and improvisation. Students will walk away having learned several pieces, and with an enriched understanding of these beautiful musical traditions. This workshop is geared towards intermediate or advanced-level musicians, particularly (but not necessarily) violinists.
