Old Town School of Folk Music is a place where more than 200 of the most talented teaching staff in the country come to share their knowledge with people just like you. Whether you're a beginner or the best on the block, the Old Town School offers classes for every interest, inclination, and skill level.
The Old Town School of Folk Music offers intimate opportunities for hands-on learning in a relaxed and informal setting. Learn how to play a specific instrument or join an ensemble to practice your playing with others. From guitar to tin whistle and everything in between, our music classes will get you playing in no time.
Repertoire classes are often offered between numbered levels, and are designed to strengthen fundamental skills and give you the chance to apply them to new songs. We encourage taking corresponding Repertoire classes when offered, and that you repeat all classes until you are comfortable enough to move on.
The Old Town School's international dance program is one of the largest and most diverse in Chicago. You'll find something for every musical or cultural interest and ability level - from Jazz Light & Easy to Brazilian Capoeira. Learn to love 'Uehe in Hula, isolate and shimmy in Middle Eastern Belly Dance, or celebrate in Chicago House - learn much more than just steps in one of the 100 cultural classes offered.
Dance and movement classes are also a great way to get movement, rhythm, and body awareness into your life - all bodies are welcome!
The Ensemble Program gives you an opportunity to play with others on a regular basis in a comfortable setting - listening to and learning from the folks around you. To get the most our of each class, you'll need to be able to play your instrument at an intermediate level. For folks who have taken our Core Guitar classes, you'll fit in most ensembles once you've learned the skills taught in Guitar 3.
Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced musician looking to take your playing to another level, private lessons provide the opportunity to get the personal attention that can be beneficial to your growth as a musician. We offer 30-, 45- and 60-minute varieties at both our Lincoln Square and Lincoln Park campuses.
A terrific way to study something new – we offer workshops in dance, music, songwriting, and more! Workshops are taught by our faculty as well as visiting and touring artists, and they showcase unique and specialized options for students of all levels. These special courses are priced low and designed to to be very hands-on. They are usually offered on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the year.
