Robert Johnson for Banjo

Lydia Martin, versatile old time banjoist from Maryland and co-author of "Robert Johnson For Banjo", available form Hal Leonard Publications, will give an overview of adapting blues songs to banjo in various open tunings. Students should have some familiarity with playing either banjo or guitar: tuning and making a few chords. Blues fingerpicking experience is helpful but not required, as this will be covered in class. Some basic tab/sheet music will be provided for songs and scales. There will also be some duscussion of banjo in the history of Blues and American Folk Music.

“With a voice as pure as an Appalachian spring, but with a fierce mastery of her instrument and a delightful mix of southern-rooted tradition, Lydia Sylvia Martin taps into an inventive mix of styles that her adept banjo playing, natural vocals and arrangements bring to new life.”
