Clawhammer Arrangement and Accompaniment

Free yourself from tab dependency, and learn to play clawhammer in most any situation. Discover what a clawhammer player can do to accompany a song that does not mesh easily with the rhythm or chord progression of a "typical" old time tune. The class will focus on providing students practical tools and methods to create arrangements within their own abilities, whether in an ensemble setting, or learning new songs at home on their own. We will employ a workshop-style format in which we will discuss and demonstrate our different personal approaches to arranging, and students will be supported in finding their own personal arranging styles.
Learn to:
•Identify the key and tuning of a song
•Create your own arrangements, regardless of whether the melody is complex or performed at a high tempo.
•Use existing musical vocabulary and repertoire to identify musical phrases and piece together melodies.
•Play along with a guitar only knowing the chords or accompany a fiddle tune only knowing the key/tuning.
•Develop listening techniques – during ensemble play, at home or when learning songs from others.
•For some songs, the traditional bum-ditty rhythm may not be applicable or appropriate. We'll cover techniques for accompanying these in clawhammer style.
•Write out your arrangements correctly in tablature.
