Son Jarocho: Jarana

Join Patricio Hidalgo with the world renowned group, Son de Madera, direct from Veracruz, Mexico for this special workshop in Son Jarocho music. This workshop will focus on the jarana, a baroque style guitar indigenous to Veracruz in addition to singing.

Son Jarocho is a style of traditional music from Veracruz, that’s as old as Mexico itself. It’s unique sound was birthed from the fusion of indigenous, African and Spanish musical traditions present there. Son de Madera exemplifies excellence in traditional son jarocho and incorporates new sounds and stylistic perspectives.

Patricio Hidalgo is a world-renown third-generation jaranero and a master of the music, verse and dance of son jarocho. He was born in the remote rural community of Apixita in southern Veracruz and grew up in humble surroundings. Since the 90s Patricio has been focused on exploring the African roots of son jarocho as a member of the groups Mono Blanco and Chuchumbe. His work to research the near lost form of the Conga in southern Veracruz culminated in an amazing recording: The Return of the Conga. In 2012 Patricio founded the Afro-jarocho project which pays tribute to the notable contributions in son jarocho from African culture which came to the Americas in past centuries. Patricio Hildalgo joins Son de Madera in there visit to Chicago and will lead a workshop on various jarana strumming techniques and verses that accompany son jarocho standards.

You don’t have to have a jarana to participate. There will be jaranas available for use during the workshop. Ukulele in the key of C is also acceptable.

The workshop will be followed by a short fandanguito, or group jam.
