The tin whistle has taken a significant role in the folk music of Britain and Ireland, and is used to play a variety of different dance music styles, including English Morris Dance, Irish Traditional, Scottish Traditional, and others. In Ireland, it is often the first instrument future fiddlers, flautists, and pipers learn as it provides relatively quick access to a large repertoire of material. The instrument’s cheapness, versatility, and ease in learning make it a great way for children to explore folk woodwind traditions.
Join Patrick Cannady, master Irish piper, for a fun workshop on the Irish tin whistle. Learn how to hold and play the whistle with good posture and breathing, learn whistle maintenance and setup, and how to play a scale and simple tune like an Irish polka or march.
Patrick has been teaching children, teens, and adults tin whistle and the uilleann pipes since 2008.
Students must have a Generation “D” tin whistle. These are available for purchase in the Old Town School Music Store.
