Back-Up Fingerstyle Banjo Workshop

Clarke Buehling is probably the foremost living exponent of "minstrel" and "classic" banjo -- 19th-century banjo styles that are the ancestors of modern-day clawhammer and bluegrass. His repertoire includes rags, marches, jigs, reels, and old time songs. Clarke is a soloist and leader of the Skirtlifters Stringband, an historian of American banjo music, founder of the American Banjo Fraternity Orchestra, and an advocate for reviving interest in the gourd banjo.

In this workshop Clarke will get into “Back-Up Old-Time Fingerstyle in a String Band Setting.” You’ll work with bar chords in "Two-Finger C" tuning. Clark will cover some positions up the neck of the banjo such as ones Charlie Poole, Gus Cannon and other early recording stars used. No tunes from previous workshops will be repeated, unless folks want to review them. (Note: Playing chords on the banjo will in no way ruin your ability to play authentic banjo music in other styles. Ha!)
