Learning through listening, imitation, ear training and technical application. Typhanie Monique’s students will understand the physical and emotional aspects behind vocalizing. She emphasizes finding the “individual voice”. A strong technical foundation is key to freeing the mind and voice. Over the years she has enjoyed sharing her musical abilities and experience with others while fostering their own creativity. Typhanie also focuses on the importance of leadership & theoretical knowledge as a vocalist. Typhanie joined the faculty of the Old Town School in 2002 and teaches private instruction, as well as group classes in Jazz Vocals and Improv/Scat coursework. July '08 she was invited to teach in Moscow for a month long program the the Moscow College of Improvised Music. Typhanie has been a guest panelist at DePaul University, Elmhurst College, and various high schools throughout the country.

Typhanie is one of the hardest working vocalists on the Chicago music scene. She is a full-time performer. Stylistically she's a natural at jazz, soul, R-n-B and pop music. Trained classically, she applies her technical abilities to modern repertoire. She has toured internationally, released three nationally acclaimed jazz CD's, her latest a Christmas disc entitled, Yuletide Groove. All three discs have received national radio play, press (Downbeat, JazzTimes, Cadence, Chicago Tribune to name a few) and both In This Room and Yuletide Groove received recognition in the preliminary voting round for the Grammy's, Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.

Typhanie has performed in the Chicago club scene since 1998 fronting many projects including; her original funk band, Peking Turtle (2 self released CD's, manager, composer), fronting Chicago's premier improv outift, SUMO, lead vocalist and co-writer with House project, Mr Egg Germ, the T. Monique Quartet, and lends her vocals to various jingles and hip-hop projects. She continues to write material for herself and other artists.

Typhanie hosts a jazz jam session at the nationally acclaimed jazz club, The Jazz Showcase one Monday a month.

Typhanie is a member of ASCAP, IAJE, MENC, JEN & the Chicago Chapter of The Recording Academy (NARAS)

Education: BA - Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, IL; currently enrolled - Masters in Vocal Pedagogy, Northeastern Illinois University. Private study with Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy & Shelia Jordan
