Teachers at the Old Town School

Kerry Sheehan

Piano

Kerry started teaching music theory during high school while studying at The Conservatory of Barrington under Nancie Kozel. She attended the University of Kansas, where she received a BA in Music Theory, with a concentration in Piano. Although most of Kerry’s formal piano studies focused on classical music, Kerry plays a variety of styles and has played both keyboard and accordion with several local bands and on multiple recordings.

Kerry joined the Old Town School staff in 1995 and shortly thereafter, developed OTS’s first group piano-focused class called “Keyboard for Kids”. The primary goal of the program was to make piano accessible and fun for students as young as 4 years old. After several years of refining the curriculum, the co-taught Group Piano Program and the Little Red Piano Programs were launched.

Kerry has a particular knack for teaching very young children and children who learn differently. She believes that piano is an important first instrument, and that the skills learned in this program are beneficial whether a child continues on with piano studies or explores another instrument.
