The Grammy-winning ensemble eighth blackbird has energy, wildness, and finesse to burn. The group is one of Chicago's finest, playing across the country and around the world, and their belated Old Town School debut is cause for celebration.
The National's guitarist Bryce Dessner's “Murder Ballades” is the foundation of this one-time-only program. Dessner has commissioned a composition surrounding the ‘murder ballad'; “a European tradition, in which grisly details of bloody homicides are recounted through song.” Exploring tales of romantically-charged killings, early folk songs, and the Civil War era murder ballad/fiddle tune, the six musicians of eighth blackbird commit themselves to the depths of the seductive music and violent stories of these murder ballads. eighth blackbird presents a unique concert program that has thrilling virtuosity and beautiful tunefulness, classical chops, and laugh-out-loud theatrics from classic and new pieces. The show will feature additional music composed by Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry, indie-folk artist Bon Iver and steel-pan virtuoso Andy Akiho.
