Workshops with JUMP RHYTHM® Jazz Project

JUMP RHYTHM® Technique is for people who love to move with energy and rhythm to the beat-driven sounds of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and/or world music.  Given JRT’s worldwide appeal to non-professional and professional dancers, actors, singers, and athletes, this class is open to people of ALL levels.

Observe any JUMP RHYTHM® Jazz Project rehearsal:

Tuesday mornings from 9:00am to noon and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30pm. All Old Town School folks are welcome to watch, ask questions, or give comments! Feel free to let us know when you’re thinking of coming by emailing us at siggy@jrjp.org.

Sample a free session of Standing Down Straight® (SDS):

Any day or evening of the work week.  Email siggy@jrjp.org to make an appointment, whether for yourself or for yourself and one or two friends. SDS is a relaxation-based, injury-preventive alignment concept that helps frees the body of unnecessary strains and guides it to move with less effort, more power, and greater fluidity.  SDS serves as the physical and philosophical foundation of all JUMP RHYTHM® work.

View and discuss the film history of American Rhythm Dancing®:

Any day or evening of the work week. Email siggy@jrjp.org to arrange a viewing, whether for yourself or for yourself and friends. At these viewings JRJP artistic director Billy Siegenfeld will screen and discuss excerpts of performances done by some of the 20th and 21st centuries’ great body-rhythmicists, including Bill Robinson and Jeni LeGon, Fred Astaire and any of his partners, Gene Kelly, Gwen Verdon, Bob Fosse, Chita Rivera, Gregory Hines, Michael Jackson, Beyoncé and her back-up women, the krumpers of South Central L.A. like Miss Prissy and Tight Eyez, and the hundreds of today’s performers young and old who are wowing audiences at online venues like Hip Hop Dance Camp.

More about JUMP RHYTHM® Jazz Project:

JRJP company members and teachers use both JUMP RHYTHM® Technique (JRT) and Standing Down Straight® as a means of guiding people toward two goals: first, transforming the moving body, accompanied by the scat-singing voice, into a rhythm-accurate, emotion-charged percussion instrument; second, experiencing how one’s unique individuality is best articulated when expressed not only solo but through rhythmic call-and-response-based interactions with one’s fellow rhythm-makers. JRJP takes this community-directed, “rhythm-first” approach to prestigious arts centers like Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, to nationally renowned dance studios like Steps on Broadway in New York City, and at organizations like Child’s Voice and senior centers that are devoted to bringing the arts to less abled children and adults.  Company members, current and past, teach JUMP RHYTHM® Technique’s unique point of view at Northwestern University, Stephens College, Carthage College, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and Randolph College.  JRJP is also proud to announce that, since 2014, Jump! Collective, a new dance company based in Helsinki, Finland, is dedicated to using both JUMP RHYTHM® Technique and Standing Down Straight® as foundations of its own choreographic and pedagogical work.  Wherever it lands, JUMP RHYTHM Jazz Project’s goal is eco-psychological as well as physically exhilarating:  it encourages people to use a body-sustainable, community-sensitive approach to making art as a means of connecting in life-affirmative ways to the earth, to oneself, and to each other.

Mission
JUMP RHYTHM® Jazz Project (JRJP) — a 501(c)3 not-for-profit arts organization — is a multiple-Emmy® Award winning performing and teaching company based in Chicago that celebrates the communal spirit of jazz-rhythm-based, everyday-bodied performance – dancing, singing, and story-telling in rhythmically swinging syncopated conversations to the infectiously beat-driven sounds of the blues, jazz, funk, hip hop, and world music.  The company’s overarching goal, whether through workshops and performances is to inspire individuals of every background, age, and degree of abledness to attain a more gratifying physical and mindful connectedness to the earth they live on, to their own bodies, and to other people. JRJP company members, current and past, teach and perform this rhythm-driven, community-directed point of view using both the movement-and-voice pedagogy of JUMP RHYTHM® Technique (JRT) and the mind-body-integrating alignment concept of Standing Down Straight®. JRJP has been partially funded by the Illinois Arts Council and the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation.
