Women’s War Songs and Beyond

As a celebration of the evolution of women in this past century, we will hone in on the music that reflects women's role in the World War II and post-war era. Women were marginalized for decades into tight, predictable roles, but some broke through during war times to become singers, riveters, bread-winners, and heroines of that period. That musical break-through influenced the following generations of female singers, many of them black, that shaped the baby boom generation which holds power now. We will sing anthems from The Dinning Sisters and The Andrews Sisters, and later black women groups Martha and the Vandellas, The Supremes, and The Shirelles.
