Gentle Shepherd: Improvisation Lab

The Gentle Shepherd is unique amongst operas. Written by poet Allan Ramsay and published in 1725, the music comes from the Scottish fiddle and folk music tradition, and features heartfelt ballads and foot-stomping traditional dance music. Instrumentalists play a fusion of traditional fiddling and Italian Baroque style, while singers perform “arias” based on folk and fiddle tunes.

Join Brandi Berry and members of the residency team and dive into the variations found in tunes from the Scottish folk opera, the Gentle Shepherd and other tunes of the time. Participants will build their own set of variations which everyone will then try out together in the “improvisation lab”. Walk away with a packet of music and variations to continue on your Scots/Italian inspirations!
