Descriptive Summary:

Title: Old Town School of Folk Music Archival Collection, ca. 1957-2010

Quantity:  42 cubic feet comprised of 44 boxes of Photographs and Prints (Series 1) and 39 boxes of Manuscripts and Printed Materials (Series 2)

Abstract:  The Old Town School of Folk Music Archival Collection consists of photographs, prints, negatives, manuscripts, and printed materials documenting the activities, classes, performances, and history of the Old Town School of Folk Music (OTSFM).  Old Town School staff members, students, and teachers created the majority of the photographs and documents.  Some photographs produced by commercial photographers for marketing purposes.

Provenance:

The materials in this collection were acquired from a wide-variety of sources by the OTSFM Resource Center between the mid-1980s and the present.

Restrictions:

Use of this collection restricted to patrons of the OTSFM. Reproductions of items in the collection, including images, publications, and manuscripts materials, are granted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Resource Center manager, and are dependent on known agreements made between the OTSFM and rightful copyright holders.

Processing notes:

Armstrong-Johnston, Chicago, IL, processed this collection under the supervision of Colby Maddox, manager of the OTSFM Resource Center, Fall 2010. The Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board (ISHRAB) generously supported processing costs. OTSFM volunteers Stephen Van Houten and Mareva Lindo assisted in the processing.

Complimentary collections:

In addition to the archival collection described in this inventory, the OTSFM retains a sizeable collection of audio and video recordings dating from the 1960s to the present.  Consisting of thousands of hours of concert performances and OTSFM events, these tapes are increasingly becoming available in digital form.  Interested researchers should contact the OTSFM Resource Center for further details.

Additional archival materials related to the OTSFM can be found in the collections of the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress, which holds copies of published materials, such as brochures, catalogs, and newsletters, and audio recordings.  In 2006, the Chicago History Museum (CHM) acquired digital copies of images from the School's December 1, 1957 opening day activities.  The CHM also holds assorted posters and pamphlets related to concerts, classes, and other activities in its permanent collection.

Scope and Content

Series 1:  Photographs and Prints

Photographic materials in the collection depict a wide range of activities, including class instruction, faculty and staff at work and during social gatherings, concerts, benefits, and an array of formal events. The majority of photographs depict activities that took place inside one of the School's three primary locations, 333 W. North Ave, 909 W. Armitage Ave, and 4544 N. Lincoln Ave. Other photographs depict concerts or benefits at Chicago-area venues, such as Orchestra Hall and Stages Theater. A small number of photographs show classroom activities at OTSFM branch locations in Skokie and Evanston, which operated briefly in the late 1970s-early 1980s. In addition to photographs, Series 1 includes an assortment of print posters related to OTSFM.

OTSFM staff, students and teachers made the majority of photographs that depict everyday school activities. Publicity portraits of artists (Series 1, Subseries 1) were largely produced by commercial photographers, as were images that document major concert events and publicity images such as those created to promote the School following the building renovation at 909 W. Armitage in 1987, and its opening of the 4544 N. Lincoln Ave building. in 1998.  Notable among the staff and student photographers who produced images in this collection are:  Kiko Konagamitsu, who documented the School in the early years, including gatherings in Dawn Greening's Oak Park living room; Robert McCullough, who made many images documenting the School's opening night; Ron Gordon, who was actively engaged in the school from 1974-1979; Toni Michaels, who produced many publicity images in the late 1980s; and Russel O'Brien, who regularly made portraits of faculty, staff and visiting artists at 4544 N. Lincoln Ave.

Series 2:  Manuscripts and Printed Materials

The OTSFM manuscript collection does not represent a comprehensive institutional archive, however, a variety of administrative documents, including financial statements, reports, and program information can be found in Subseries 1.  The extensive clippings collection found in Subseries 2 documents OTSFM events and activities from its inception in 1957 through 2008.  Subseries 3, the papers of Dawn Greening and family, provides a unique window into the workings of the School.  The School's full-time administrator, "Momma Dawn" Greening corresponded with teachers, performers, and students.  Documents found in Subseries 4, People and musical groups, include press releases, newspaper advertisements and clippings, and materials sent to the School in publicity packets.  Photographs contained in these promotional packets have been photocopied and the originals transferred to Series 1, Subseries 1.  Also included in Subseries 4 is a small selection of correspondence related to Old Town School founder Win Stracke, including letters from William "Big Bill" Broonzy, as well as original sheet music and copies of "Uncle Win's Song Kit".  The promotional materials in Subseries 5 include copious examples of the School's printed output and document the School's activities through catalogs, press releases, advertisements, and programs for concerts and events.  Subseries 6 includes publications produced by the OTSFM such as Come For to Sing as well as early publications documenting the activities of the American folk music scene.

Institutional History:

Now the largest school of its kind in the United States, the Old Town School of Folk Music had a very small, almost happenstance beginning.  After attending guitar classes taught by musician Frank Hamilton in the Oak Park living room of folk music-lover Dawn Greening, singer and actor Win Stracke had the idea that a school could be structured around Hamilton's teaching techniques.  Hamilton agreed, and the Old Town School of Folk Music was born.  Organized by Stracke, Hamilton, Greening, and administrator Gertrude Soltker, the School's opening ceremonies and registration were held on the evening of December 1, 1957 at the Immigrant State Bank Building at 333 W. North Avenue.  Hundreds of prospective students, performers, and educators attended signaling the strong desire for such an institution and foreshadowing the popularity of the School that would follow it for the next fifty-plus years.

From the small space on North Avenue, the School moved to a larger space at 909 W. Armitage Avenue in 1969 allowing it to expand its offerings and increase its student base.  In 1998, a new OTSFM location was opened at 4544 N. Lincoln Avenue in a space that formerly housed the Frederick H. Hild Regional Library.  What was once a small school open three days a week for adult guitar and banjo classes has grown into a major educational center offering over 700 classes seven days a week at multiple locations for students of all ages.  In addition to its class offerings, the School's performances and music festivals have been a draw for musicians and spectators alike.  Major talents such as Peter Seeger, Mahalia Jackson, Bill Monroe, and Big Bill Broonzy have performed at the OTSFM, and from the ranks of its teachers and students the School has produced some of its own folk music stars such as Steve Goodman and John Prine. Through its concerts, events, and classes, the OTSFM has become a major Chicago cultural institution.

The most comprehensive institutional history of the Old Town School of Folk Music can be found in Biography of a Hunch: the History of Chicago's legendary Old Town School of Folk Music, by Lisa Grayson, published in 1992 on the school's 35th anniversary. Additional information about the school's history from 1992 to the present can be found on its website at www.oldtownschool.org/history.
