Kekele
Sunday, July 9th at 4:30pm on the Main Stage
Kékélé is a Lingala word for a fibrous vine that climbs trees in the tropical forests of the Congo River basin as well as the Gazebo in Welles Park on the Northside of Chicago. At least for one sunny day in July. The sounds of Kékélé harken back to the 1960s golden era for Rumba Congolaise- an irresistible mix of Cuban rumba and African rhythms reflecting the optimism of the newly independent African nations.
Considered a Congolese supergroup, Kékélé singers, Bumba Massa and Loko Massengos singing careers date back to those golden days and the intricate guitar playing of Papa Noel proves he has been around the block once or twice himself. Enchanting vocals, vivacious rhythms and spellbinding guitar-based dance make the Congolese Rumba of Kékélé a totally uplifting and joyous experience that is sure to captivate this years Folk & Roots Fest.
"Delicious melodies, inspired and original arrangements, faultless and non-indulgent playing, scalp-tingling voices" - BBC Radio 1
