Dry Branch Fire Squad

4545 N Lincoln Ave · The Myron R. Szold Music & Dance Hall · 773.728.6000

  • Dry Branch Fire Squad has been a staple in the traditional bluegrass world for nearly 40 years now, with singer/songwriter/instrumentalist/comedian Ron Thomason leading the way. As the only band to have played at every single Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival, it's clear to see why Dry Branch Fire Squad perform annually at many of the nation's premier festivals such as Grey Fox, Festival of the Bluegrass, and Hardly Strictly.

Dry Branch Fire Squad provides thoughtful harmony lines that give expression to the soulfulness and meaning of bluegrass and old-time music. With impeccable timing and knowledge of the modern side of country, Ron's social commentary, catchy lyrics and song choice from the oldest traditions of music makes Dry Branch Fire Squad one of the most entertaining bands in bluegrass.

Ron Thomason's professional music career started when he was just 13 and he has collaborated with the likes of The Clinch Mountain Boys, Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley. He started Dry Branch Fire Squad in 1976 and is known to enjoy music-making more now than ever. In addition to Ron on mandolin is guitarist Adam McIntosh, banjoist Tom Boyd and Jeff Byrd on upright bass.

"As much as country music's new traditionalists pride themselves for their purity, they will have to go a long way to capture the historical resonance and simplicity found in the Dry Branch Fire Squad…A sense of austerity guides the quintet's music; a lonesome Appalachian harmony…is at the heart of a tale as dire as it is epic. Utterly refined, these songs, drawn from the public domain, are about heavenly rewards and earthly strife and offer an unyielding emotional veracity." The New York Times
