Joining forces in 2010, Native Sun was born fusing Hip Hop and African rhythms with the aim of promoting a positive message of universal peace, equality, social justice and environmental change with sweet melodies that fuse addictive head bouncing Hip Hop undertones, conscious bilingual lyrics and catchy hooks. This event is made possible by the Program of African Studies at Northwestern University. Fatbook is an 8-piece Chicago based group of musicians that draws influence from all over into a soulful sound — Funk, Reggae/Dub, Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop, West-African and Brazilian music, and some rock & roll. Fatbook shows are an energized excursion through soundscapes that move across boundaries. Bloco Maximo, is a 12-piece force of Brazilian percussion, bringing carnaval batucada from Bahia and Rio de Janero right here to Chicago. The exciting mix of traditional samba and funky grooves is a mix that will hit your core and make you move your feet. Founded in Fall 2011, the group has already been gaining attention playing at Chicago's Double Door, the Old Town School of Folk Music, Mayne Stage, and a special appearance and "Sound Culture Presents: Brazilian Carnival 2012." Folia Tropicalia Dance Group will be joining Bloco Maximo.
