featuring Pupy Cantor
On March 27, 1983, the salsa world was rattled by the violent death of one of Puerto Rico's most admired composers and soneros. During the golden days of salsa, Ramón Luis Ramírez Toro, better known as Chamaco Ramírez, marked a generation of musicians with his unparalleled improvisational abilities and a high pitched voice that could send chills up your spine. He became an icon after his debut with the Tommy Olivencia Orchestra in 1961. Albums like “Trucutú”, “Planté Bandera” and “Alive and Kicking” included some of the most popular salsa classics in history.
This tribute concert will include an exclusive preview of the documentary Alive and Kicking: The Story of Chamaco Ramírez and a live performance by his dear friend Pupy Cantor, founding member of Conjunto Libre and former lead vocalist for Willie Rosario. This event will be one of the highlights of the 2nd Annual Afro-Caribbean Improvised Music Festival.
