The Magnetic Fields are the music and brainchild of New York songwriter-producer-instrumentalist Stephin Merritt, and his dramatic musical tales are often mentioned in the same breath as Irving Berlin and Cole Porter. SPIN gives him 10 out of 10; Rolling Stone described his songwriting as "gorgeous," and The New York Times hailed the triple CD 69 Love Songs as a work of "genius." Toronto, Canada's beloved and bespectacled musical linguist, Laura Barrett, introduces many us to the clocklike tones of her signature instrument, the kalimba (an African thumb-piano). Utilizing the vibrant kalimba with her warm and nurturing voice, Laura Barrett has crafted several stunning releases displaying her classically trained musicianship, wild imagination and experimental tendencies. Barrett classifies it as "the prog-folk, dystopic-stage-musical, acoustic-glitch everyone's doing nowadays."
