Maria de Barros' music travels through countries dense with culture, picking up pieces of each along the way, combining distinct inflections of Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, France and Spain, while allowing the tradition and culture of Cape Verde to permeate. Born in Senegal, raised in Mauritania, with deep family roots in Cape Verde, de Barros' admiration for Cesaria Evora is evident yet intermingled with different musical geographies.

Slide guitarist and singer Markus James, now based in northern California, has been recording and performing original, blues-based music with traditional Malian musicians since 1994, when he first made his way to the village of Niafounke, home of the legendary Sonrai musician Ali Farka Toure. Markus has performed at the Festival In The Desert three times, and in 2007, was invited to perform at the series of Jamal Poi tribute concerts for his friend and inspiration, Ali Farka Toure, in Bamako and Niafounke, which were broadcast on Malian national television. For this date, Markus James will be joined by Karamba Dioubate a member of one of the legendary Griot families in West Africa. Karamba is Jembe Fola, meaning a master of jembe drumming, and will also be playing kamele n'goni, karinye, calabash with vocals. Also performing is Amadou Camara a multi-instrumentalist from Guinea, West Africa, where for many years he performed with the National Ballet Troup of Guinea.
