Born in Zimbabwe and now residing in Johannesburg, South Africa, multiple award-winning acoustic guitarist Tony Cox has become a icon of the instrument in his own country. Starting out on Hawaiian guitar as a child in what was then Rhodesia, Tony eventually picked up a traditional guitar and applied finger-style techniques he had absorbed over the years from such greats as Leo Kottke and Bert Jansch. Using these finger style techniques as a platform, he honed his original style made up of multi-textured rhythms and facets of the rich, indigenous music of his upbringing and surroundings in South Africa. Tony returns to the stage at Old Town School after bringing down the house in his debut U.S. appearance in the 2007 Afrofolk series.

An African Guitar workshop with Tony Cox is offered in the Thursday Workshop Series on Thursday, June 18th.
