Workshops
Workshops at the Old Town School are a terrific way to study something new. Our faculty and special visitors showcase one-time-only specialties, trials of new class ideas, and extensions of our classes. Most of these meet only once or twice and are priced low, and like our classes, are usually hands-on. So get in where we can hear you!

Cancellation Policy: You must call to cancel 24 hours before the start time of your workshop, in order to receive a full refund for the class. No refunds or partial credits will be given after the 24 hour period before your first class has passed.

Bandoneon workshop with David Hodges

The bandoneon is the powerful soul of Argentine tango music. Bandoneonist David Hodges will introduce this bohemian instrument, teach basic technique and explore its importance in the evolution of tango music. Hodges is the featured bandoneonist with Argentina Tango On Stage and has performed with many of the top tango ensembles across the U.S.. No instrument is required to attend this workshop.

Congolese Percussion and Dance workshop with Teber and Pline

Congolese traditional rhythms were originally played in the forest village square to heal both physical and psychological maladies, to celebrate life's important passages and just to have fun. Teber Milandou-Sita and Pline Mounzeo, from Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, are master drummers and dancers with 20 years of experience with their country’s finest traditional music and dance groups. They will give a drumming and dance workshop based on traditional Congolese rhythms ituri kanga, edenda, and mountwash (pure original rhumba). The drum used is the senga n'goma or djembe. Students should bring their own drum although some loaner instruments will be available.

Circuit Bending Workshop

Take apart your old toys and make a brand new musical instrument! Circuit bending is the art of modifying existing battery-powered electronics (like children's toys, guitar effects units, inexpensive battery-powered instruments, etc.) to create unique musical instruments by adding wires, knobs, and switches to control new connections within the device's pre-existing circuitry. Enjoy bizarre sounds, electronic loops, sampling, distortion, and other easy to create effects. At the end of this workshop you'll be able to identify and explore the basic components of a typical circuit board, install an output jack, switches, body contacts (and more!), and control a world of new sounds.
