Hennessy Breath and BodyWork for Musicians

Engage the whole body in performance!

Ruth Williams Hennessy’s Breath and BodyWorkShops have been helping people find simple, organic ways to release their unique and authentic sounds for over 30 years. In this hands-on workshop, participants discover and improve their habitual patterns of body mechanics and breathing.

From instrumentalists to vocalists to conductors, many musicians are holding their bodies in unconscious habits of misplaced tension. Even when the mental understanding of technique is clear, the body is categorically unable to respond because the debilitating habits have become automatic responses. These issues often manifest in the discomfort of tight necks, shoulders, arms, hands, and backs; poor breath management; repetitive stress injuries; and fatigue.

Workshop participants learn to identify their own, individual patterns of habitual use. Simple exercises increase body awareness. Muscle release, breathing maneuvers, and physical exercises introduce more efficient habits. Participants who wish to be assessed and helped while performing should bring their instruments. Methods informing this work include The Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, Laban/Bertenieff, Pilates and Pilates Breathwork, and Stough Breathwork.
