Songs, Scales, and Rhythms from Mauritania, Africa

Join superstar Noura Mint Seymali and her musicians for a presentation of traditional and contemporary music from Mauritania and northwest Africa. Learn the different musical scales, microtonal modes, and rhythms used in the music of the region. The group will also present traditional instruments like the Ardine (a Mauritanian harp similar to the West African kora), discuss how standard guitars are refretted to perform this style of music, as well as how drummers can break down the rhythms of northwest Africa. The workshop is open to all instruments. Vocalists, guitarists, mandolin, strings players, percussionists, and drummers may find the workshop especially interesting.
